How the rate is built

What Wyoming actually charges

  • The rate is two provisions stacked. W.S. 39-15-104(a) levies an excise tax of three percent, and subsection (b), effective 1 July 1993, adds "an additional excise tax of one percent (1%) which shall be administered as if the tax rate under subsection (a) of this section was increased from three percent (3%) to four percent (4%)."
  • Counties may add their own. Under W.S. 39-15-204(a)(i) a county general-revenue tax runs in half-percent increments up to 2%, and (a)(iii) allows a specific-purpose tax of up to 2% more.
  • But those county taxes are capped together: paragraph (a)(iv) says the total imposed within any county under (i), (iii) and (vi) "shall not exceed three percent (3%)". So outside a resort district the ceiling is 7%.
  • Resort districts are the exception — W.S. 39-15-204(a)(v) lets one levy up to 3% more inside the district, on top of the county figure.
  • Wyoming has no wage income tax.

Common questions

Wyoming sales tax, in plain terms

What is the sales tax rate in Wyoming?

The Wyoming state rate is 4%. Local jurisdictions can add up to 3%, so the most anyone pays in Wyoming is 7%.

How much is sales tax on $100 in Wyoming?

At the 4% state rate, $100 becomes $104.00 — $4.00 of tax. Add your local rate in the calculator above for the figure you will actually be charged.

How do I work out the tax that is already inside a total?

Switch the calculator to "Take tax out of a total" and enter the amount on the receipt. It divides by one plus the rate rather than subtracting the rate, which is the part people usually get wrong — taking 7% off a total is not the same as the total being 7% tax.

Does this include Wyoming city and county taxes?

Not automatically. Local rates are set by thousands of separate jurisdictions and change on their own schedules, so this calculator asks you for yours instead of guessing. Your receipt or your county revenue office has the exact figure.
