How the rate is built

What Colorado actually charges

  • The Department of Revenue's Sales Tax Guide states that Colorado state sales tax is imposed at a rate of 2.9%.
  • That number is misleading on its own. The same guide says a sale may also be subject to state-administered local sales taxes — and, separately, to self-collected home-rule city taxes.
  • The home-rule part is what makes Colorado unlike anywhere else: those cities are not administered by the Department at all, so the state itself cannot tell you the rate. You file with the city.
  • State-administered local rates are published in the Department's DR 1002, which is reissued every January and July.
  • The guide also notes that retailers owe the 2.9% on their taxable sales whether or not they actually collected it from the customer.
  • Colorado also taxes wage income, at a flat 4.4%.

Common questions

Colorado sales tax, in plain terms

What is the sales tax rate in Colorado?

The Colorado state rate is 2.9%. Counties, cities and special districts add their own rate on top, so what you pay at the register is usually higher than the state rate alone.

How much is sales tax on $100 in Colorado?

At the 2.9% state rate, $100 becomes $102.90 — $2.90 of tax. Add your local rate in the calculator above for the figure you will actually be charged.

How do I work out the tax that is already inside a total?

Switch the calculator to "Take tax out of a total" and enter the amount on the receipt. It divides by one plus the rate rather than subtracting the rate, which is the part people usually get wrong — taking 7% off a total is not the same as the total being 7% tax.

Does this include Colorado city and county taxes?

Not automatically. Local rates are set by thousands of separate jurisdictions and change on their own schedules, so this calculator asks you for yours instead of guessing. Your receipt or your county revenue office has the exact figure.
