2026 rate schedules
Income tax calculator by state
What a year of income actually costs — on the return, not on payday. The federal half is the same everywhere; the state half is what makes two identical salaries owe two different amounts.
Your salary for the whole year, before anything comes out — the figure in your offer letter, not what lands in your account.
$2,200 off the tax each.

States that tax income
Each of these was read off that state's own return instructions — the rate is the easy half, and what the state lets you subtract before applying it is the half that decides the bill.
States with no income tax
Nine states charge no individual income tax at all. There is no state return to file, so the federal figure is the whole income tax bill — on a $60,000 single salary, $5,020.
More states are on the way
The bracket states are next. What you get here comes from each state's filing instructions rather than its withholding tables — two different documents with two different numbers for the same person, which is why this figure can differ from the one on your payslip.
Why two calculators
Payday and the return
A paycheck calculator answers what your employer holds back this fortnight. It runs off withholding tables, which have the standard deduction baked into a zero bracket so payroll software can work one period at a time without knowing anything about your year.
An income tax calculator answers what the year costs. The deduction comes off explicitly — $16,100 single for 2026 — the rate schedule starts at 10% rather than zero, and credits are applied at the end. The two numbers are not meant to match, and the gap between them is precisely what a refund or a balance due is made of.
Both are on this site, both from the primary documents, and each page says which one it is answering.
