About Actualsum
Actualsum is a set of free calculators for the money questions a US worker actually asks: what a paycheck comes to after tax, what an hourly rate is worth a year, what sales tax adds at the register, what a lottery prize keeps, what a mileage claim is worth.
What it is
Every calculator runs in your browser from tables transcribed out of the primary publication — IRS Publication 15-T for federal withholding, each state's own department of revenue for state tax, each state's published rate table for local sales tax. The paycheck side covers all 50 states and DC; the sales tax side covers the 18 states that levy one, with the full county and city table on the state page for the states that publish one.
The result is an estimate for planning, not a filing. Where a figure depends on something only your employer or your return knows — pre-tax benefits, a second job, local income tax in the handful of places that have it — the page says so rather than guessing.
What it is not
Actualsum is independently run. It is not affiliated with the Internal Revenue Service, any state department of revenue or comptroller, or any payroll provider, and it does not give tax advice. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere (see Privacy).
How the numbers are kept honest
Each table carries the URL it was read from and the date a person last opened it; the build fails when a source goes stale. The full list, with read dates, is on the sources and methodology page. If a number is wrong, the fastest fix is an email with the page and the published figure you expected.
