How the rate is built
What Maryland actually charges
- The Comptroller’s own business tax tip says it in one line: the rate is 6% on taxable sales, and “there are no general local sales taxes in Maryland.” A $100 purchase costs $106 in Baltimore and $106 on the Eastern Shore.
- ⚠️ Four things are not 6%. Alcoholic beverages are 9%. A short-term passenger car or recreational vehicle rental is 11.5% and a truck rental is 8% — peer-to-peer car sharing lands on 8% or 11.5% depending on the vehicle. Electronic smoking devices and tobacco pipes are 12%.
- Below a dollar the tax is not a straight 6% either — the state publishes a bracket: 1¢ at 20¢, 2¢ from 21¢, 3¢ from 34¢, 4¢ from 51¢, 5¢ from 67¢, and 6¢ once the price reaches 84¢. On larger amounts the rate chart is what a register uses, so a cent either way is normal.
- New modular buildings and new mobile homes are taxed at 6% of 60% of the price, which works out to 3.6% of the sticker.

Common questions
Maryland sales tax, in plain terms
What is the sales tax rate in Maryland?
The Maryland state rate is 6%. Maryland does not let counties or cities add a general sales tax on top, so that is the rate statewide.
How much is sales tax on $100 in Maryland?
At the 6% state rate, $100 becomes $106.00 — $6.00 of tax. Add your local rate in the calculator above for the figure you will actually be charged.
How do I work out the tax that is already inside a total?
Switch the calculator to "Take tax out of a total" and enter the amount on the receipt. It divides by one plus the rate rather than subtracting the rate, which is the part people usually get wrong — taking 7% off a total is not the same as the total being 7% tax.
Does this include Maryland city and county taxes?
Not automatically. Local rates are set by thousands of separate jurisdictions and change on their own schedules, so this calculator asks you for yours instead of guessing. Your receipt or your county revenue office has the exact figure.

State rate last checked 2026-08-28. This calculator uses the state rate. County, city and special-district taxes are added on top of it in most places, and they are set locally — if you know your local rate, type it in and it is added to the state rate.
