How the rate is built
What Indiana actually charges
- The Department of Revenue’s own rate history table gives one figure for the sales tax: 7.00%, effective 1 April 2008 to the present. Before that it was 6% from 2002, and 2% when the tax was first adopted in 1963.
- There is no general local add-on. Indiana counties and cities cannot bolt a percentage onto the 7% the way a California district or a Tennessee county can, so a $100 purchase costs $107 in Gary and $107 in Evansville.
- Two local taxes do exist, but neither touches an ordinary purchase: the food and beverage tax — usually 1%, in the counties and towns listed by the department — falls on prepared meals and drinks, and the county innkeepers tax falls on lodging of less than 30 days.
- So if you are working out the tax on a restaurant bill in Marion County or a hotel night in Allen County, the state figure here is the floor, not the total.

Common questions
Indiana sales tax, in plain terms
What is the sales tax rate in Indiana?
The Indiana state rate is 7%. Indiana does not let counties or cities add a general sales tax on top, so that is the rate statewide.
How much is sales tax on $100 in Indiana?
At the 7% state rate, $100 becomes $107.00 — $7.00 of tax. Add your local rate in the calculator above for the figure you will actually be charged.
How do I work out the tax that is already inside a total?
Switch the calculator to "Take tax out of a total" and enter the amount on the receipt. It divides by one plus the rate rather than subtracting the rate, which is the part people usually get wrong — taking 7% off a total is not the same as the total being 7% tax.
Does this include Indiana city and county taxes?
Not automatically. Local rates are set by thousands of separate jurisdictions and change on their own schedules, so this calculator asks you for yours instead of guessing. Your receipt or your county revenue office has the exact figure.

State rate last checked 2026-08-28. This calculator uses the state rate. County, city and special-district taxes are added on top of it in most places, and they are set locally — if you know your local rate, type it in and it is added to the state rate.
