Backwards from a total
Reverse sales tax calculator
You have the total on the receipt and you need the two numbers behind it. Enter what you paid and the rate you were charged, and this splits it back into the price before tax and the tax.
County, city and district taxes are set locally and are not looked up here. Leave this blank to see the California state rate on its own.

The arithmetic
Why you divide, not subtract
| Total on the receipt | $107.00 |
| Rate charged | 7% |
| Wrong: take 7% off the total | $99.51 |
| Right: divide by 1 + rate | $100.00 |
| Tax that was charged | $7.00 |
The gap is $0.49 on a $107.00 receipt, and it widens with the rate — which is why an expense report built on the subtraction never quite reconciles.
Common questions
Working tax backwards
What is a reverse sales tax calculator?
It works backwards from a total you have already paid. A normal sales tax calculator starts with a price and adds tax; a reverse one starts with the receipt total and separates it back into the price before tax and the tax itself. Useful for expense claims, bookkeeping, and any time the receipt shows only the total.
How do you calculate sales tax backwards from a total?
Divide the total by one plus the rate, then subtract. At 7%, a $107.00 total is $100.00 before tax and $7.00 of tax. Written out: $107.00 ÷ 1.07 = $100.00.
Why can I not just take the percentage off the total?
Because the percentage was charged on the smaller number. Taking 7% off $107.00 gives $99.51, which is $0.49 short of the real price. The error grows with the rate, and it is the single most common mistake in backing tax out of a total.
Does this handle local and district rates?
Yes. Enter your local rate alongside the state rate and the extraction runs on the combined figure, then splits the tax back into a state share and a local share in proportion. Backing them out separately would round twice and leave a cent belonging to neither.
Which states are covered?
18 so far: California, Tennessee, Washington, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Wyoming, South Dakota, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, Indiana, Maryland. More are on the way. If yours is not here yet, pick any state and type your own combined rate into the local field — the arithmetic is the same.
